The Whitsunday Islands are a collective of continental islands of various sizes off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is situated between Townsville and Mackay and some 900 kilometers north of Brisbane. The islands are one of the most popular Australian tourist destinations.
Whitsunday has 74 islands. All the islands has natural advantage of having beautiful nature everywhere. This is the reason Whitsunday islands are the choice of many people for being relax and enjoy holidays. The vast majority of islands are designated national parks and major attractions include access to coral reefs for snorkeling and diving, pristine beaches, especially Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island.
The islands are what you come to the Whitsunday for. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed here in 1770, was struck by the area’s beauty and named the island after the day he thought it was “Whit Sunday”, the seventh Sunday after Easter.
Hamilton Island and Proserpine are the airports that service the region. Boats depart from adjacent to the airport at Hamilton to many of Whitsunday Island resorts.
